Back to. . .
Did you ever notice how, when people talk about autumn, it’s about getting “back to” things? Well, after the summer of our dreams, Patti, Jessie, Karyn and I have come down from the clouds and are getting “back to” our home turf – the land of reality.

For Patti, that means carpooling, or kinderschleping, as she calls it – a new word she invented for the terror of chauffeuring more kids than she has car windows. Jessie envies Patti, because once school starts, she’s back to driving to work in traffic so dense that she’s tempted to take a hostage just to get to use the carpool lane!

But of all the autumn “back to's,” one makes us all want to run away …our husbands watching their football games with those endless replays. Couldn’t they be pre-empted by Desperate Housewives – a show with a name that describes how we really feel?

What could we do, but turn desperation into inspiration? We delved into one of our favorite old pleasures, dating back to our college days – our delight in “loving hands”  craftwork. With all our fall activities, our own hands were full, and we deserved some indulgences.

So, we took a detour from our carpools to our local Brighton retailers’. Patti chose a Bijoux Quilted Ziptop handbag with hand-laced croco detailing. Jessie fell in love with the Glass Mountain Long Necklace and its radiant Swarovski crystals, capped with silver-plate. I walked out with the Capistrano Scroll Belt encircling my hips – you should see its’ spectacular nail-head accents.

All things considered, we decided that our husbands’ “back to sports” season wasn’t all bad…because they’ll never notice we went “back to shopping” ‘til after the playoffs!

“Autumn is a second spring when
every leaf is a flower.”
Albert Camus
