Before our arrival we had seen photographs of Kibera, but nothing could have prepared us for the extreme despair, decrepit conditions, the trash littering every pathway and every road, and the lack of basic resources.

There is minimal water in this poor community that comes, if they are lucky, twice a week from a municipal supply from nearby Nairobi. We watched as this young boy filled up yellow five-gallon jerry can with water from a large collection tank, but the water is not pure and clean and could make him sick.

The hospital in Kibera where we will be drilling is called Ushirika Medical Clinic & Maternity Services, which is open 24-hours and sees about 300 patients each day.
