Storeowner Wins A Trip of a Lifetime to Kenya

As an "altruistic incentive" - Brighton's Founder and President, Jerry Kohl, offered a prize to the store who raised the most donations to charity: water - a trip of a lifetime to Kenya, Africa, to see firsthand the life-saving effects of our charity efforts as the first well is dug for a hospital that has no clean water.

Jenny Spurlock, owner of J.J. Jaxx, a store selling gifts (and lots of Brighton products) in Cookeville, Tennessee, won the challenge by raising $13,820 toward digging freshwater wells in Kenya. Her month-long series of events titled, "Kenya Dig It" generated excitement in her community and raised awareness of the enormous need for water in the developing world. Jenny's store also donated 100% of the profits from the Kazuri Bead jewelry promotion to charity:water.

For Jenny, this promo had "little to do with selling jewelry." It was about "creating excitement in the store and getting the community involved in doing something to benefit others." She held weekly events to create enthusiasm (raffles, silent auctions, free gift with $20 donation, games and for a grand finale, a community yard sale in the store's parking lot). She also educated every customer who came into the store about charity:water. She sent out press releases and had a weekly 5-minute radio spot. By spreading the word that 1.1 billion people on the planet are without clean water, and sharing her passion for making a difference in the world water crisis, Jenny's "win" has become a win for the people of Kenya!
